In February, Preet Sahota of Edgmond Wines presented his new selection of South African wines. This month, we were pleased to welcome Preet back to Hull with his new range of wines from New Zealand. However, given that South African wines appear to be very close to Preet’s heart (or he just can’t pass up good South African bottles), his first selection of the night was indeed a South African “Champagne‑style” sparkling wine. Preet also brought along one white and one red wine from South Africa to accompany our dinner. However, true to his word, all of Preet’s presentation wines hailed from New Zealand.

The white wines included a Riesling, which Preet described as “complex,” though some felt it had too much “petrol” on the nose. Next, we tasted a single‑vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, which Preet discovered on his travels to Marlborough piled up on pallets covered in black plastic shrink‑wrap, and for which he “bargained” his way to a good price with the producer. The final white wine was a Pinot Gris, also from a single estate, described as having a “mature structure.”

The second half of Preet’s presentation featured two Pinot Noirs and a Carmenère. As with the white wines, the reds were also 100% of the stated grape variety, and most were produced from grapes grown in a single vineyard.

Having hosted Preet at Hull twice in 2026, we hope he will return to see us in 2027. Perhaps then he will be able to answer the question: What is it about Southern Hemisphere wines that keeps you going back again and again?
