OFF PISTE - THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED
Our April meeting took us “off piste” with an intriguing selection of lesser‑known grape varieties and regions, expertly sourced from The Wright Wine Company. The line‑up offered members a chance to explore distinctive styles from France, Georgia, New Zealand, Italy, Ukraine and Uruguay.
Whites
Jacquère, Abymes, Savoie, France (2023) Fresh, light and alpine in character — a classic expression of Savoie.
Khikhvi, Teliani Valley, Kakheti, Georgia (2022) A beautifully textured Georgian white with gentle spice and orchard‑fruit depth.
Gewürztraminer, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Marlborough, New Zealand (2023) Aromatic, expressive and true to its variety, with vibrant tropical and floral notes.
Reds
Fumin, Ottin, Vallée d’Aosta, Italy (2021) A rare mountain red offering savoury complexity and lively acidity.
Odessa Black, Villa Tinta, Odessa, Ukraine (2019) Deep, dark and characterful — a bold wine from an emerging region.
Tannat, Revolution, Viña Progresso, Uruguay (2022) Structured, modern and impressively balanced; a fine example of Uruguay’s signature grape.
This “road less travelled” tasting proved both educational and enjoyable, showcasing how exciting and diverse the world of wine becomes when we step beyond the familiar.
