AN EVENING OF SOUTH AFRICA AND NEW ZEALAND WINES - KAY ROTHERY

Preet Sahota paid his second visit to Caistor at Stallingborough Grange, this time bringing mainly South African wines interspersed with a few from New Zealand. He attracted a strong audience, giving us our biggest turnout for some time.

We began with Truida MCC 2023, a single‑vineyard, vintage, Champagne‑style wine. It appealed to some, though not universally. A Grenache Blanc from Schenkfontein 2025 followed — a complex wine from the oldest vineyard in South Africa. The final white was Ceres Swansong Pinot Gris 2019 from a single Central Otago vineyard, universally enjoyed, as was the special price of £9.99.

The first red was a classic Pinot Noir from Smith & Co, again from Central Otago and again well received.

A rare Petit Verdot 2025 from One Movement followed. Henry Costa aims to produce wines that no one else does, and this was a star of the evening. The final tasting was Winkelshoek Cape Vintage 2022, a vintage port from 55‑year‑old vines — another wine that was very well received.

Preet has a unique style, making sure he speaks to everyone in the room while we taste. He answers questions with knowledge and great enthusiasm, and we look forward to his next visit!
